Social relationships impact human behavior.

For this paper, you will compose a 3-page (Times New Roman, double-spaced, one-inch margins, etc.) response to the reading Raymond Williams, “From Medium to Social Practice” in Marxism and Literature.(Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1977): 158-165.

In your paper, imagine that you have been asked to explain the article to one of your fellow students. You should concisely summarize the main points, offer one or two points of critique, and respond to the author’s argument. Some possible questions to consider as you write are:

  • What problem is the author trying to address?
  • What are the stakes of the author’s argument? In other words, why is it important to the author that I agree with their position?
  • What does the author want me to understand or believe?
  • Who is the audience that the author is trying to convince?
  • What is effective or ineffective about the way the author makes their argument?
  • What lingering questions does the author leave unanswered?
  • Your paper should:
    • Clearly and concisely articulate both the author’s position and your own
    • Identify at least two points of critique and explain why they are effective or ineffective at supporting the author’s argument
    • Propose the article’s “next steps” by identifying what is missing, what remains unanswered, or how the author’s argument might be usefully applied in another context
    • Have a logical structure and correct spelling and grammar
    • Include a bibliography with proper citations for all sources

Moreover, the fact that Williams’ argument embraces how time improves one’s mindset is commendable. As much as time is of the essence, considering how the social practice is a significant element of culture substantiates Williams’ argument. I believe that it is crucial to embrace social changes as time moves on because people adopt the new trends which advance culture (Griswold, 48). In this case, visual artists may choose new ways of expressing their work by learning about new mediums to implement. Musicians, dramatists, and writers may also identify new strategies for improving their social practice. Hence, the variation of the meaning of culture is unavoidable because the advancement of universal laws, norms, and values, and skills highly matter. However, I feel that it would have been more enlightening for Williams to delve deeper into explaining why contemporary cultural production is a severe social practice crisis (Williams, 164). Considering that culture defines human life, the elements that contribute to shaping all aspects of culture should be addressed, including the crises. Altogether, this would uncover the sociological approach in-depth to factors contributing to cultural creation.
