This week we will be discussing how society shapes family life.
According to Gamson, Croteau, Hoynes & Sasson (1992) people use the media to “construct meaning about political and social issues” (p. 374). Media tells society what the “norm” is and what is expected of them, people turn to television and social media to determine what is “right and wrong” if society influences the individual and families we must ask ourselves what role the media places in this.

How would you define a religion? What characteristics must a belief system have in order for it to be considered a religion? If a belief system did not include faith, a God, heaven, or hell, would it still be a religion? How much of a belief system do you have to believe in order to be considered a member of a religion, 100%, 90%, less?
You may begin posting on August 12th for credit. This week we will be discussing how each of you defines religion, what are the characteristics of a religion, and how much of a belief system you need to be considered a member of a religion.
Monivas (20007) explains that Durkheim was convinced that society and God go “hand-in-hand” and that there would never be a time was there is no religion, Durkheim felt that with no religion there would be no society. Durkheim goes against many sociologist’s thoughts that religion is just a passing phase, in fact he argued that though some deities or rituals may cease there would just be a shift to other deities and rituals, that religion will always be present (Monivas, 2007).
