quotes to incorporate into your fake interview with person named Tobi Oris:

  • “Sometimes I encounter microaggressions, and yes they’re usually subtle but damaging forms of racism. There like derogatory comments and stereotypes. Sometimes people don’t even realize that what they’re saying or doing is offensive. It makes me uncomfortable and also makes me feel unseen at times.” (Social Instance)
  • “I’ve had an experience at an old job where I felt that it was clear that the only reason a White man got a position I didn’t was because he wasn’t Black like me. I was just as eligible for the position, if not way more well equipped to handle it. Thankfully I know my worth and now work somewhere more suited for me, but sometimes it’s not as simple as finding another job that will see your talent.” (Economic instance)

“I was racially profiled by the police while I was with my mom at a young age. That was one of the first times I realized that the life I’m going to live may be dangerous or different at times then a privelaged friends life. It seems like something so minor but people don’t realize how much safer it is when you’re not someone of color, face to face with a cop. It’s literally a privilege to feel safe in a circumstance like that. These forms of racism mess with you mentally.(Emotional Instance)

(2021) argues that American ways of doing things, including everyday occupation, are often perceived through a racialized lens. Lavalley and Johnson (2020) further point out that this phenomenon influences how resources are allocated, access to economic empowerment opportunities, as well as economic policies, practices, and habits. McCluney et al. (2021) notes that daily interactions in American society are informed by de-facto regulations and rules based on racist logic, despite no longer being linked to the abolished slave status. In addition, many Americans still subconsciously accept the supremacy of whiteness. Lavalley and Johnson (2020) argue that this phenomenon can be attributed to their daily routines and lives, often reinforcing the idea that lighter skin is superior to darker skin. This is a false concept initially developed to maintain slavery and the economic power doing so provided to whites.
