Domestic violence has been described as the committing of violent acts against a person in a situation where the perpetrator and the victim are in a domestic setting. The term is most synonymously used with violence against a family member or between people in a cohabitation. However, its meaning is broad enough to include violence committed against a former spouse, children, parents or someone in an intimate relationship with the perpetrator even if they are in a same-sex relationship. The violence may take the form of physical, emotional, economic, religious or even sexual abuse.
