Barriers in The Current System of Mental Healthcare

Mental disorders account for 13% of diseases’ burden globally. By 2030, this number is expected to spike by 15% (Funk, 2016). Despite the rise of prevalence in mental illnesses, the current mental healthcare is practically deficient, and, in some countries, they are nonexistent. Where these systems exist, there are so many barriers and limitations in access and practical use.

First are the inadequacy of experts. For decades, access to psychiatric services has been hindered by enough personnel to take care of the overwhelming numbers of people with a mental health condition. Forty-four million adult Americans need psychiatric care every year. This number is overwhelming to approximately 25000 practicing psychiatrists in the US (Moller, 2017).
