The Hippocratic Oath originated within the medical profession and has been in existence since the times of ancient Greece. The oath required physicians to abide by particular ethical standards. Even though it was intended to guide ethical decision-making within the medical profession, the ideals it proposes should be adopted within the business environment. Unethical conduct and business practices geared towards self-promotion at the expense of public good are becoming quite rampant in society. The most effective way to get rid of such practices and conduct is to have managers take the Hippocratic Oath. Doing this will allow managers to regain society’s trust, especially since it enables them to look at their roles as going beyond the responsibility they have to shareholders.
