Median is crucial in the analysis of public health data because it helps to find an actual average when the distribution of data is skewed. Skewness refers to the distortion of the normal distribution curve in a graph representation. For example, if the public health data is about the severity of dementia in the population, most people to have symptoms of dementia are expected to be 65 years of age or above. However, studies have shown that younger people can show some signs of dementia at their early ages (Johannessen, Engedal, & Thorsen, 2016). As a result, the graph will have a longer curve on the left, leading to left-skewed distribution.  In such a case, only the median can provide the most accurate average value. Besides, the mode is also crucial when handling public health data. It is because it can determine the rate of illnesses in the population. For example, if the most frequent BMI count is 26, then obesity is likely to spread at a higher rate.
