Social media is a ubiquitous phenomenon that pervades every aspect of social life in the present age. Healthcare professionals offer several benefits such as networking, media-sharing, blogs, and micro-blogs that can allow for easy connectivity and sharing of information. Social media provides tools for professional networking and learning to enhance the promotion of patient care and public health programs (Chauhan, George, and Coffin, 2012). However, using social media also involves some risks to health care professionals and their patients. Privacy breaches, distortion of boundaries between personal and professional life, dissemination of misinformation or poor-quality information, and potential damage to professional image (Peck, 2014). Therefore, it is prudent for healthcare institutions to provide guidelines regarding use of social media to avoid these risks.
