Answer preview

The negative attitudes and prejudice towards people infected with HIV/AIDS is known as stigmatization. It is prevalent in most societies regardless of the number of people with HIV/AIDS. Stigmatization related to HIV and AIDS persists because of the fear that the disease inspires in people. In the 1980s, at the onset of the HIV epidemic, there was little information, and thus people propagated propaganda (Kontomanolis and Michalopoulos, 2017). It was associated with unpopular behaviors such as prostitution, drug use, and homosexuality. Being diagnosed with HIV and AIDS was considered a death sentence. Thus, there was a lot of inaccurate information that fueled the stigma for HIV/AIDS patients.
