Their many contributions made a profound impact in nursing history and in developing the future of nursing. When considering our predecessors, many contributions in nursing relate to mentoring or precepting future nurses. A preceptor has the unique position to influence the way in which a nurse forms their basic framework for practice and professional development (Barker, 2010). A preceptor could be viewed as an arborist; if the root system of large red wood tree is weak and not well established the tree will eventually die. As preceptor or mentor, you influence the nurse’s basic foundation for practice, developing organization, refining and defining clinical skills, augmenting strategies for efficiency all to provide competent care and promote the future of the profession.
