For the final project, I chose to write about stress and how to manage and cope with it. The reason I chose this topic is because I have been affected by stress many times and because of this class I found it an opportunity to learn more about it. I learned from the class more on ways to manage stress like yoga and other exercises.

Although we talked about how our minds perceive stress as stimuli during the second week of the class, I plan on presenting way to manage stress and cope with it. The option I am planning on taking will be a written paper and I hope I can deliver something good.

Due to the science behind the effect of music in reducing stress, I have embraced instrumental music with a slow tempo. I find it calming and help me meditate about my life. This even motivates me to write down lyrics that express my feelings. In the process, I figure out my way forward more confidently and make well-thought decisions without stress. Hence, listening and writing are two emerging mechanisms for managing and coping with stress. In most cases, therapists advise an individual to have a personal journal where they express their innermost feelings concerning events that have been stressful and even happy moments. Niles et al. (2014) identify this stress coping mechanism as expressive writing, which allows individuals to express emotions on paper even when they cannot talk about it. With findings from a study in Niles et al. (2014, p.10), “Expressive writing produced anxiety improvement in participants relatively high on emotional expressiveness.” Participants who were highly expressive in their journals reduced their anxiety levels, unlike those that were less expressive. Based on my situation, stressful events always heighten my anxiety; hence, altering my proper functioning of daily activities.
