Answer preview
Boundary crossing occurs when usual restrictions are violated I some way which may be beneficial to the client. Boundary violations are the breaking of defined limits in a way that will always cause harm to the patient. Multiple relationships that blur professional boundaries are discouraged in the counseling profession as they often result in a lack of objectivity for the counselor. In chapter 3 of the textbook, Self-monitoring is critical throughout the process. Ask yourself whose needs are being met and examine your motivations for considering becoming involved in dual or multiple relationships (p.12). Counselors may also interact with other counselors to ensure they remain objective about specific issues. According to Section A of American Counselling Association (2014), sexual or romantic counselor-client interactions or relationships with current clients, their romantic partners, or their family members are prohibited. Multiple connections are highly discouraged. Counselors should also consider limiting their online interaction with clients. It is a way of maintaining professional boundaries.
