Answer preview

Gender stereotypes are another barrier to women taking up leadership positions (Schwanke, 2013). The most common stereotype revolves around the notion that women are the primary caregivers and the men are the providers. As such, many companies expect that once a woman gets pregnant, they will leave their duties for a while to take care of their children. Therefore, organizations refrain from promoting women because when they get pregnant, they will have to stay at home and look after the children, leaving their duties unattended, which might affect the company’s performance, especially if they occupy critical positions. Such a flawed line of thinking forced many women to either give up or postpone motherhood because they know that doing so gives them a better chance of getting promoted.
