Answer preview
Nurses are a critical part of healthcare and make up the largest group of healthcare occupations. However, the nursing shortage has become a significant concern and is experienced at the community, state, and national level. It is characterized by a situation where the demand for nursing exceeds the supply. It is a significant concern as it impacts healthcare services and also creates a gap in healthcare.
The nurse workforce compromises an aging workforce with skills and experience in the nursing profession, and the average age for registered nurses is 51 years. They are the primary providers of health care and provide long-term care and have a baccalaureate degree or an associate degree hence providing quality care as per their education (Dewar, 2017). Most nurses also have specialized education in family health, women’s health, and pediatric health.
