Answer preview
According to the American Medication Association, non-adherence to medication refers to a situation whereby a person fails to take eighty percent of the medicines prescribed to them. Non-adherence to medication is a common phenomenon witnessed amongst older adults (Meiner & Yeager, 2019). There are a couple of risk factors that underscore this phenomenon amongst the elderly. Identifying and assessing these factors is vital, considering non-adherence affects the effectiveness of medications. One of the risk factors I need to look at is whether an older adult is experiencing decreased visibility and motor dexterity. This is because these factors affect their ability to read drug labels and instructions correctly. Furthermore, decreased autonomy can make it harder for elderly patients to refill their prescriptions since they cannot quickly move around.
