Several diseases can affect the normal functioning of muscles in children, adults, and older adults. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an example of a neuro-muscular disorder that mostly affects people aged between 40 and 70, although the onset could begin earlier (Preidt, 2020). The article by US News highlights the possibilities of new drugs that improve survival and function as tested by clinicians over the past few years. The piece explains the findings of a clinical trial that allowed patients to live six months longer after administering the placebo. Currently, no research shows ALS’s causes, as most researchers aim to understand the environmental and genetic factors surrounding its occurrence.
