There is a wide literature that has addressed the high rate in which nurses have been leaving the nursing profession due to dissatisfaction with their work. According to Sawatzky, Enns, and Legare, (2015), the shortage of nurses has been on the rise due to the high rate at which nurses are leaving the profession and this has significant cost and consequences to the healthcare industry and the country in large. Although the exact extent of the shortage in nurses may not be known, the estimates provided by this study depict the problem as significant and called for urgent measures to improve the retention of nurses (Sawatzky, Enns, and Legare, 2015). With healthcare needs increasing every day and the nurses required to keep up with advancement in procedures and techniques of the health care systems, the shortage of nurses is expected to rise.
