Another crucial finding centered on demand-withdraw patterns. Gottman and Levenson observed that a consistent and continual demand-withdraw pattern becomes a strong predictor of divorce. This pattern includes one partner making demands, criticisms, or complaints (the demander), while the opposite partner responds by avoiding warfare, withdrawing, or being defensive (the withdrawer) (Dunbar & Abra, 2021). Couples who exhibited a demand-withdraw pattern in their interactions and relationship were more likely to undergo relationship dissatisfaction which is a great threat of divorce. The demander normally seeks extra engagement, expression of feelings, or the resolution of problems, while the withdrawer may often feel attacked, overwhelmed, or criticized, making them retreat from the interaction or relationship. This pattern creates a cycle of resentment, frustration, and emotional disconnection, further contributing to relationship distress.
