Before getting into the analysis and discussion of which between nature and nature has the most impact on human conduct, it would be appropriate to begin by defining the two concepts. Woolfolk and Perry (2014) describe nature as the genetic or hereditary factors contributing to the physiology, personality, and physical appearance adopted by a person. In contrast, nurture denotes the environmental influences affecting an individual and might include factors such as their early childhood experiences, culture, and familial relationships (Woolfolk & Perry, 2014). As alluded to in the paper’s introductory paragraph, the nature vs. nurture debate continues to elicit intense debate, with different perspectives being shared relating to which of the two has the most influence on the behavior adopted by an individual.
This debate is not recent, considering philosophers such as Descartes, Plato, and John Locke all waded in on the discussion. Descartes and Plato advanced the position that some aspects in an individual are inherent, or rather, they manifest themselves irrespective of the influence of environmental factors (Lynch et al., 2019).
