Answer preview

A mix of positive emotions coupled with anxiety was running high for myself and other NBA fans regardless of the teams we supported. While we enjoyed what was happening in the bubble, worse things were happening outside, with police killing two black men stirring a debate on racial biases. I was elated when I saw these issues highlighted in the NBA. Andre Iguodala mentioned that they felt that if they continued to play, they would water down the arguments on racial relations in the country (Lashinsky & Okeefe, 2020). instead, they decided to align their actions to the political climate in the country. As a Lakers fan, I was impressed that the NBA had chosen to raise their voice on such sensitive matters- first with the boycott of the Milwaukee Bucks, then with the printing of ‘black lives matter’ uniforms. I believe that many associations would have preferred to steer clear of such matters if put in that position, but I was glad that the NBA did not.
