Autonomous exploration of the environment

Toddlerhood is arguably one of the most challenging stages for parents, as infants make the transition from complete dependence to the realm of autonomous exploration of the environment. But as motor and language abilities improve, behavior typically becomes easier to manage as toddlers learn new modes of self-expression and develop an understanding of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors in a social context. In light of these developmental changes, what are some strategies to guide toddlers so that they may develop greater control over their emotions and behaviors during this difficult stage? Provide at least one or two resource support for your response (quote or idea, just use citation). Your response should be at least 250 words.

Answer preview

Additionally, children’s inability to express themselves effectively leads to challenging behavior, especially in cases where caregivers do not meet their needs (Gleason et al., 2016). Thus, parents/caregivers need to help them learn different, more constructive ways of self-expression. In this context, children need to express and cope with their emotions; when toddlers name their feelings, parents/caregivers can suggest ways to solve the problem or feel better. Finally, letting children make age-appropriate decisions such as clothing and food is critical, giving them a sense of competency and a feeling of control and supporting their growing confidence. Ultimately, the lessons instilled during toddlerhood serve as a stepping stone for middle childhood. The advances made during this stage continue to be refined in middle childhood.
