Mental health treatment facilities

The final week of this course will focus on applying what we have learned to show how psychological testts can be used in clinical practice to provide a diagnosis or to make recommendations regarding treatment. We will explored the comprehensive nature of psychological and neuropsychological assessments, including the methods for the assessment and ethical factors associated with the final evaluation report.

Respond to the following questions in a substantive way integrating information from your text or other scholarly sources (please include citations and references for your work):

1.How might psychological testting be used in a mental health treatment facility to support treatment? What testts/procedures might be included in a psychological evaluation?

2.How do neuropsychological assessments provide information about impairment? What testts might be included in a neuropsychological assessment battery?

3.What is malingering? Why might it be important to evaluate malingering in a psychological or neuropsychological evaluation?

4.What are the ethical considerations associated with conducting assessments and writing psychological reports? How could this information be misused? Consider the welfare of the patient.

Answer preview

Malingering can be defined as the behavior or act of exaggerating the existing medical or psychological symptoms with a hidden motive. The individual often stimulates false symptoms with the interest of obtaining retribution or rewards. Financial incentives have become a critical motivating factor for patients to engage in malingering due to the expected monetary compensation. Also, the act can be practiced as a means of avoiding certain situations. The circumstances that a patient may attempt to engage in malingering is to avert possible misdiagnosis. Another reason for this behavior is to prevent unrequired treatments. It is essential for malingering to be assessed in psychological and neuropsychological battery assessments to ensure proper diagnosis is offered to the client. Assessing malingering behaviors will help identify possible memory deficits (Tracy and Rix, 2017). It will determine whether a subject is responding in a particular manner intentionally to portray memory impairments.
