In one of my sales jobs, I learned much about reward, expert, and informational forms of power. In sales, the more we sold the greater our income which always motivated us even during difficult times. This was an excellent example of how leaders can use reward power in their mix of methods to motivate their staff. The best-performing salespeople would get plaques posted on the premises which made specific individuals stand out. We knew we had much to learn from them after they consistently dominated the position which opened me up to the impact of expert power. When closing a deal seemed hard, we would all recommend these employees because we felt they had extra knowledge and skills for the task at hand. I learned about informational power when I found myself constantly approaching them for advice on sales-related tasks and always walked away having learned something new and useful. In conclusion, all the leadership positions I have held, the jobs I have worked, and the leaders I have worked under have contributed to my current transformational style of leadership.
