Informed consent is when a health care practitioner informs the patient about their condition, testing, and treatment before deciding what to do. It is a moral and legal principle for patients’ autonomy. Patients have the right to accept or refuse medical therapies, so it is ethical for practitioners to let clients make their own decisions (Bailey & Burch, 2016). However, there are exceptions to the informed consent rule, including emergency and patients’ incompetence to permit testing or treatment. Informed consent is necessary because it creates trust between the patient and doctor by ensuring good understanding. When a patient makes decisions concerning their health, they feel respected and appreciated concerning their health.
