Biography
Johann Sebastian Bach was born on 21st March 1685 in Eisenach which is a village in Germany (Geck, 2014). His date of birth is not certain as some scholars argue that he was born on 21st March while others write that Johann was born on 31st March. He was the son to Johann Ambrosius Bach who was a talented and renowned classical musician and Elizabeth Lammerhit Bach. His father had numerous musical talents which including the art of playing the violin, a skill which he passed on to his son. Sebastian had seven siblings, three of whom were musical geniuses. His father performed continuously in different regions in Germany, and during his tours, he was accompanied by Sebastian and one of his elder sisters (Geck, 2014). Sebastian’s extended family was also musical record indicates that his uncles also helped improve his artistic skills as most of them were either choir masters or music composers.
Sebastian’s was influenced by his father who played a significant role in exposing him to the basic skills surrounding music as well as the violin (Wolff, 2001). However, Sebastian was orphaned at the age of ten years which forced him to go live with his elder brother Johann Christoph Bach who lived in Ohdruf (Geck, 2014). During that period, his brother exposed him to the clavichord and taught him about musical composers lived during that era. Christoph exposed Sebastian to contemporary music. His uncles, especially Johann Christoph Bach who lived during the 1645 to 1693 period also taught Sebastian on musical organs. Sebastian was also influenced by the schools which he attended as while in St. Michael’s, he played the harpsichord and took part in the school choir.
