According to our textbook, “families are multilayered systems that both affect and are affected by the larger systems in which they are embedded” (Corey, 2017 p 409). Part of the layers of that system are the additional members of the family. Family therapy is different from counseling individuals and as such, a clinician should seek out additional trainings through workshops, classes, and additional supervision. Looking at the differences between the systematic and the individual approaches shows just how complex family therapy can be. A therapist must learn how to navigate exploring the systems in the family as well as tending to and connecting to each individual (Corey, 2017 p. 405). To focus on the family and their relationships with each other and how those relationships create or disrupt family homeostasis is complex. The many different dynamics at play mean that more skill and knowledge would be needed to competently counsel a family. This could be gained only through additional courses or workshops. For the new therapist, seeking additional supervision could also help to sharpen those skills learned throughout training, I think would also be necessary. There are some approaches that are used in family therapy that are structured. So knowing the proper way to apply those approaches would require additional trainings. I am currently in the couples and family course. Thankfully we do mock sessions and those have been remarkably helpful as we learn more of the specific family theories.

Family identities are based on the boundaries and relationships that exist in a family. This facilitates the collaboration of the formal treatment and chances of informal treatment from the clinician. Improved quality assessment…
