Rita George, in chapter five, brings to light the stereotyping of Islam. The internet and talk and talk shows feed audiences saying, “Muslims are terrorists, that Islam oppresses women, that Muslim equals Arab that jihad means holy war that Islam is homogenous” (Tvrtković, 79). On this note, these messages about Islam and Muslims portray the stereotypical thoughts of outsiders, creating a negative impression about the religion and believers. The best way to avoid the stereotypical message is by gathering information from key believers with informed knowledge. Significant aspects of learning about Islam are the five pillars. The first is the shahada, which involves Islam’s creed and actions to convey their submission to God. The second pillar is Salat, whereby Muslims must pray five times per day.  Also, the Islam belief promotes zakat, meaning almsgiving to purify the believers from greed (Tvrtković, 90).  Sawm is the fourth pillar that emphasizes the importance of fasting during Ramadan. Lastly, hajj or pilgrimage gives Muslims the chance to connect with fellow believers by traveling to Mecca during Hajj.
