Imagine that the HR department of your chosen organization from above is going to design a compensation approach for the job that is aligned with reinforcement, expectancy, and agency theories. Briefly describe the job, then describe a compensation approach for that job that aligns with all 3 theories.

Assessment Directions

Examine Southwest’s current HR practices, as reported in public sources. Download the HR Design Decisions worksheet. Complete the worksheet with your review and rationale of the elements listed below to decide where Southwest Airlines’ HR practices fall.

  • Employees as expenses vs. employees as assets
  • Compensation below market, above market, or competitive
  • Spontaneous training and development or planned training and development
  • Specific job descriptions or general job descriptions
  • External or internal recruitment, or both
  • Limited socialization of new employees or extensive socialization

Visit O*Net. In the search box, search for your current job (OPERATIONS MANAGER), a job you know well, or a job you may aspire toward. Answer the questions below based on the job you searched for:

Job Interview

Chapter 6 describes experience-based situational interview questions in which a candidate must describe how he or she handled a specific type of situation (see Table 6.2 for examples). Imagine you received a promotion and were going to interview candidates to replace you in the role searched above.

Consider the answers to the question above and address the following:

  • Describe 4 experience-based situational interview questions you might ask each candidate.
  • Explain what would you expect to learn about the candidate from their response to each question.
  • Explain why it is important as the hiring manager to know what you expect to learn from these questions?

Assessment Directions

Your internship with Southwest Airlines is turning into a great hands-on learning opportunity for you. Your manager has now tasked you with proposing a talent management plan for pilots at Southwest Airlines. Your proposal will be considered by the Director of HR to make a formal plan.

Develop a 5- to 6-page proposal that includes the following:

  • A recommendation of 3 recruitment sources that are best suited to recruit pilots. Consider the quantity of resumes generated, the percentage of resumes likely to result in accepted offers, the time to fill a position and the cost to fill a position.
  • An evaluation of common methods used to select a candidate
    • Recommend 3 methods for selecting new pilots. In your evaluation, consider reliability, validity, utility, and legality.
  • An evaluation of common methods used to train and develop employees
    • Recommend 3 methods for training pilots at Southwest Airlines. Consider learning and development outcomes, cost of training and development, the effectiveness of training and development, and risks.
  • An evaluation of common performance management systems
    • Recommend 1 method for performance management of pilots at Southwest Airlines. Consider strategic congruence, validity, reliability, acceptability, and specificity.
  • An evaluation of common methods to minimize voluntary turnover
    • Recommend 1 approach to retain pilots at Southwest Airlines. Consider methods for retaining employees, meeting pilot needs, and costs.

Impactful Changes

The business environment changes so quickly that advice is often outdated. Assume you are a consultant. Based on your experience and readings, think about a few significant changes you see in the business environment today. Analyze 3 changes that you believe will have the most impactful change for organizations. Answer the following:

  • What should an HR Director be doing today to be ready for the impacts of each of those changes?

Impactful Changes to the Global Environment

An organization hired you because they are planning to do business in one of the countries listed in Table 15.2., which means their business environment will be changing. Based on your answers to the questions above on the impact of changes in the business environment, answer the questions below.

  • Which of those countries fascinates you the most, and why?
  • According to the information in that table, what are the key cultural differences between the United States and the country you chose?
  • In your chosen country, how effective do you think each of the following practices will be, and why?

The Southwest HR director would like you to review several strategic reports on the organization and provide feedback on how you think the organization should move forward.

Compile a strategy recommendation to the HR director to be used for company-wide decisions. Include the following information in your report:

  • An executive summary of the HR strategy project
  • An analysis of current strategies and issues

Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is a chronic mental health disorder in childhood and prolongs to adulthood. It causes above-normal levels of impulsive and hyperactive behaviors’ (Hooley, Nock, & Butcher, 2020).  People with ADHD mostly have trouble focusing all their attention on a single task without shifting and have a problem sitting still for an extended period. It can cause troubled relationships, contribute to low self-esteem, and also difficulty at school work. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many kids in the United States have ADHD. However, the condition might vary from one person to another (Sayal, Prasad, Daley, Ford, & Coghill, 2018). For someone to be diagnosed with it, they must show all the characteristics before 12 years.
