The subject of this reflection is the Leech Jar. This artifact was a common feature in pharmaceutical practice and was still in use in Europe as recently as the 19th century. Leech jars were containers often made from marble that would be used to store leeches that pharmacists used to treat their patients. The jars were made of hard material so that leeches would not grind their way through the containers…
