Clinical Decision Support System.

Clinical Decision Support System.

Purpose

The ideas and beliefs underpinning the discussions guide students through engaging dialogues as they achieve the desired learning outcomes/competencies associated with their course in a manner that empowers them to organize, integrate, apply and critically appraise their knowledge to their selected field of practice. The ebb and flow of a discussion is based upon the composition of student and faculty interaction in the quest for relevant scholarship.

Activity Learning Outcomes

Through this discussion, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Contribute level-appropriate knowledge and experience to the topic in a discussion environment that models professional and social interaction (CO4)
  • Actively engage in the written ideas of others by carefully reading, researching, reflecting, and responding to the contributions of their peers and course faculty (CO5)

Requirements:

Post a written response in the discussion forum to EACH threaded discussion topic:

  1. This week we learned about the potential benefits and drawbacks to clinical decision support systems (CDSSs). Create a “Pros” versus “Cons” table with a column for “Pro” and a separate column for “Con”. Include at least 3 items for each column. Next to each item, provide a brief rationale as to why you included it on the respective list.
  2. The primary goal of a CDSS is to leverage data and the scientific evidence to help guide appropriate decision making. CDSSs directly assist the clinician in making decisions about specific patients. For this discussion thread post, you are to assume your future role as an APN and create a clinical patient and scenario to illustrate an exemplary depiction of how a CDSS might influence your decision. This post is an opportunity for you to be innovative, so have fun!

Adhere to the following guidelines regarding quality for the threaded discussions in Canvas:

    • Application of Course Knowledge: Demonstrate the ability to analyze, synthesize, and/or apply principles and concepts learned in the course lesson and outside readings.
    • Scholarliness and Scholarly Sources: Demonstrates achievement of scholarly inquiry for professional and academic decisions using valid, relevant, and reliable outside scholarly source to contribute to the discussion thread.
    • Writing Mechanics: Grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation are accurate. In-text and reference citations should be formatted using correct APA guidelines.
    • Direct Quotes: Good writing calls for the limited use of direct quotes. Direct quotes in discussions are to be limited to one short quotation (not to exceed 15 words). The quote must add substantively to the discussion. Points will be deducted under the grammar, syntax, APA category.

This is topic for this week I will get at least two scholarly reference for each threaded discussion. Thanks so much.

Clinical Decision Support (CDS)

Clinical decision support (CDS) as a process designed to aid directly in clinical decision making, in which characteristics of individual patients are used to generate patient specific interventions, assessments, recommendations, or other forms of guidance that are then presented to a decision-making recipient or recipients that can include clinicians, patients, and others involved in care delivery. CDS tools existed prior to development of EHRs. Historical examples include practice guidelines carried in clinicians’ pockets, patient cards used by providers to track a patient’s treatments, and tables of important medical knowledge. The primary goal of implementing a CDS tool is to leverage data and the scientific evidence to help guide appropriate decision making. CDS tools include but are not limited to

Assessment 2 Instructions: Privacy

Assessment 2 Instructions: Privacy

Develop a release of patient information compliance checklist (3-4 pages) for hospital staff members to follow. Include an introduction that covers the HIPAA Privacy Rule, proper and improper use of health information, and existing controls to protect patient confidentiality and privacy.

Electronic health records and modern communication technologies have made health information increasingly accessible. As a result, maintaining privacy requires the handlers of health information to know and follow release of information (ROI) protocols closely. ROI is also critical to the quality of the continuity of care. ROI also plays a significant role in billing, reporting, and other functions related to patient care processes.

ROI procedures must clearly define privacy and confidentiality, often used interchangeably. However, they are distinctly different concepts. Privacy refers to the freedom from intrusion into an individual’s personal information. Confidentiality refers to the sharing of information with unauthorized users. Confidentiality is usually viewed as an ethical responsibility; however, privacy is more of a legal matter.

Privacy specialists believe that patient information belongs to patients, and they have a right to protect themselves from the potential impacts of having their information available to providers and other users. However, release of patient information is often needed for providing patient care and serving other purposes. HIPAA establishes the standard to protect patients’ confidential information and specifies the procedures for releasing it.

In this assessment you will continue on in your new role as a HIM analyst for Valley City Regional Hospital. You will gather information from the hospital’s risk manager about privacy issues and develop a three- to four-page compliance checklist, including an introduction, for the release of patient information for all hospital staff members to follow. You will want to make sure that your checklist specifically addresses the privacy issues the risk manager shared with you.

Demonstration of Proficiency

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the course competencies through the following assessment scoring guide criteria:

  • Competency 1: Describe the purposes and scope of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
    • Explain how the HIPAA Privacy Rule applies to audit violations.
  • Competency 2: Integrate privacy rules and regulations into health information management processes.
    • Outline the release of information process, including procedures, used for highly sensitive data.
    • Distinguish between proper and improper use of health information.
    • Describe the process to de-identify patient information.
    • Describe controls to protect patient confidentiality and privacy.
  • Competency 5: Communicate effectively in a professional and ethical manner.
    • Create a clear, well-organized, professional compliance checklist that is generally free of errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
    • Follow APA style and formatting guidelines for citations and references.

Preparation

To successfully complete this second course assessment:

  • View this media piece: Vila Health: Privacy.
    • As you view the media piece, keep in mind privacy requirements and the potential privacy violations presented. Based on the media piece, you will develop a compliance checklist, outlining for staff members the steps they need to take to release patient information.
  • Review the risk report and SWOT analysis you completed in Assessment 1. You may have an opportunity to incorporate elements from some of your previous work into this assessment.

Instructions

In this assessment you will continue on in your new role as a HIM analyst for Valley City Regional Hospital. The director of quality assurance likes the risk report you recently prepared (Assessment 1). Now, he would like you to complete another task.

Other leaders have brought to his attention some concerns about whether hospital staff professionals are consistently complying with privacy requirements. He’d like you to gather information from the hospital’s risk manager about this issue. The Vila Health: Privacy media piece will provide information about the risk manager’s insights. Your task will be to develop a three- to four- page compliance checklist, including an introduction, for the release of patient information for all hospital staff members to follow. You will want to make sure that your checklist specifically addresses the privacy issues the risk manager shared with you.

Be sure your ROI checklist includes all of the following:

  • What are the major steps hospital staff members need to follow when releasing patient information?
  • How does the HIPAA Privacy Rule apply to each step in the process?
  • What are the proper procedures to follow when de-identifying patient information?

Also include an introduction to your checklist. Your introduction needs to address all of the following questions:

  • What is the HIPAA Privacy Rule and how does it apply to the ROI process?
  • What constitutes proper and improper use of health information?
  • What controls does Valley Regional Hospital have in place to protect patient confidentiality and privacy?

Note: As a best practice, consider completing the checklist first. As you write the checklist, you may discover information you want to include in your introduction.

Additional Requirements

  • Length: 3- to 4-page double-spaced compliance checklist with an introduction.
  • Format: Times Roman, 12-point type.
  • APA: Follow APA style and formatting guidelines for citations and references. Include a separate works cited page for your references.
  • Writing: Create a clear, well-organized, professional compliance checklist that is generally free of errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

300 word (only) paper about why “Human Behavior is Goal Oriented”

300 word (only) paper about why “Human Behavior is Goal Oriented”

What should be in the paper:

300-word application paper. Your paper should include a real-world example (this example can come from current events, a book you read, something you learned from a different class, a behavior you observed on TV or in real life, a historical event – literally anywhere) and should clearly exemplify the lesson from the module (Human Behavior is Goal Oriented)

Your paper can be a little over 300 words without penalty

You do not need to read additional resources for this assignment

You do need a reference page

You do not need to write the paper in APA or MLA format

If you do decide to reference an outside source, you must cite it to avoid plagiarism. I do not have a preference for how you cite this work, but I do care that you credit others for their ideas and not take credit for other people’s work

What the paper is about:

The course is Social Psychology, and the professor shared multiple slides, each talking about some (in my opinion unrelated) factor which explains the topic of the assignment “Human Behavior is Goal Oriented”, and the reasons why humans do what they do.

OPTION A) One of the slides talked about something called Cognitive dissonance describes aversive arousal experienced when you have two discrepant cognitions or when your behavior does not align with your beliefs. As a classic example, most smokers know that smoking is bad for them, but they smoke because they are addicted. The knowledge that their behavior and cognitions are inconsistent causes dissonance. In order to resolve this, the smoker might choose to a) change the behavior (i.e., quit smoking), b) downplay the importance of the cognition (e.g., it’s more important to enjoy your life than think about what’s going to kill me), or c) change the cognition in some way (e.g., well, the research on the bad effects of smoking are not definitive or somehow do not apply to me). Returning to our big decision example, the reason why you might look back on your unchosen option so unfavorably is because you have resolved the cognitive dissonance brought about from not selecting that (at the time) good option. This particular brand of cognitive dissonance is referred to as the spreading of alternatives.

OR … OPTION B) Another slide talked about such things as initial attraction and mate selection. which includes topics and reasons for mate selection through parental investment in mating. The idea behind parental investment is that animals (including humans) differentially contribute to raising offspring. For humans, women generally contribute more time to raising offspring – they have the burden of carrying babies, nursing, and raising children. Women are limited to having one child at a time (more or less) and it takes a lot of resources to do so, whereas men can have theoretically limitless offspring and can contribute minimally to child rearing. This makes females the limiting sex in humans. As such, heterosexual females try to find partners that have resources, whereas males focus on features that signal fertility, such as youth and health.
