“Mountain people are among the world’s poorest and most disadvantaged. Living far from the centres of commerce and power, they have little influence over the policies and decisions that influence their lives and contribute to the deterioration of their mountain homelands. With the exception of a few regions, such as the European Alps where mountain communities are politically represented in national governments, the voices of mountain people generally go unheard. As a result, many mountain people live on the economic fringe as subsistence farmers and herders, traders and day labourers, with no authority over those who exploit their mountain homes.”
Purpose
The passage above is taken from a site linked to my favorite web site on mountain peoples, Mountain Partnership — a voluntary alliance of partners dedicated to improving the lives of mountain people and protecting mountain environments around the world, launched at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002. Dig deeply into this site; you will find plenty of useful information. Eventually you should find a link to Mountain Voices (here it is in case you couldn’t find it). The purpose of this Discussion Assignment is to engage you in this page, to give you an opportunity to learn about the mountain peoples of one country, and to share that information with your group members.
Your Task
Please do the following:
Spend time digging into the Mountain Voices Website; be familiar with the material thereon, including the testimonies at the bottom of each country page. Pick one of the countries to focus on.
For your chosen country, read the webpage thoroughly, including as many of the testimonies as you have time for.
In an informal essay of no less than 350 words (and, please, no more than 500 words), summarize what you learned – comment and reflect. In other words, good content and some personal reflections on what you learned.

Suppose you work in a hospital that just received twelve patients from a disaster event in your community. Your hospital is able to treat and provide necessary surgical services to those that require surgery. However, five patients are refusing care and requesting to be transferred to another hospital for the same services. Suggest the course of action that the hospital should take to meet the standards of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) related to public health in your community. Imagine that an unidentified individual with a gunshot wound has been transported to the emergency room. After taking the victim into surgery, the medical team realizes the individual is a minor. Examine the kind of consent that the team should obtain, and determine the resources that they could utilize in order to obtain this consent.
Using the keyword option in an advanced search, obtain a social science articlethat uses an experimental group and a control group. Summarize the article and answer ALL of the following questions:
1) Name the type of design used in the research. 2) Describe whether or not the researchers could have arrived at the same conclusions without a control group. 3) Would another design been more appropriate for the research, and if so what design and why. 4) Any ethical concerns in the research.

After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. Reconstruction was partly a period of military occupation of the south by the northern victors. Former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

The Lost Cause narrative of the South effectively sabotaged and influenced racial policy in the US for most of the post-Civil War period. (or you can take the position that it did not)

To support your position, use three specific examples from different decades between 1865 and 1930. You may narrowly focus on race or gender or immigrant status, or you may use examples relevant to all categories.
Explain why the opposing view is weak in comparison to yours.
Consider your life today: In what way does the history you have shown shape or impact issues in your workplace or desired profession?

This is guided research, not open-ended Googling. You will have a list of Sources at the end, using SWS format. You will have short, SWS-style in-text citations to those sources appropriately placed in the body of the paper. Except as your instructor might direct, don’t use other sources for your paper than those listed here. (Of course, for “starter research” you can read many sources.)
