Social Issue Narrative Essay

Social Issue Narrative Essay

Please be sure to complete by 8/28

Length: 750 word minimum

Format: MLA (12 pt. times new Roman font, double spacing, 1 in. margins)

The goal of this project is to develop skills in generating ideas by reflecting on personal preferences and experiences and how they enhance your knowledge or interest in the future. You will need to assess your audience and follow conventions of narrative essays to complete this project successfully. You will also use the steps of the writing process to compose a successful draft. Purpose: The goal of this assignment is to show your audience how a real life event inspired your interest in a social issue. You will have to choose a social issue that is important to you (this can be as simple as hair care or as complex as a key political issue). The story should be used to show your audience why this social issue is important to you. Beyond telling a story, you are explaining why that story is important to your interest and understanding of your issue. Content: This genre requires details and information that will help your audience visualize the events you are recounting. You are telling a story about a single event that influenced your interest in the social issue you are discussing. You get to choose the issue and decide how to approach it. This is creative non-fiction and you must focus around an actual event, but this can be interspersed with details that have the essence of the event even if they are not completely accurate. For example, if you cannot recall a conversation verbatim, you can still use that conversation in text by telling your audience the essence of what was said, even if it is not the exact language used. The conversation and topic must be based on real events. The overall goal of this essay is to relate an event to your interest in your chosen social issue. Do not focus solely on the narrative aspects of your experience and fail to explain what it led to and what it taught you about your issue.

Communication

Communication

Our discussion for this week starts to dig into the first chapter. First though, we are also going to discuss learning. I want you to develop goals for yourself this semester. Please list three goals. Answer the question-how your are going to accomplish the goals-what is the plan? So if you have a goal of doing my homework early. How are you going to do that? Maybe that means putting the homework on a calendar or a task list. Maybe that means you create a to-do list on your computer. Whatever works for you. The list that I posted is designed for face to face learning, but adapt to online learning.

1) Using the goal list as a guide, develop 3 goals and explain how you are going to accomplish those goals.

A challenge in online learning is the social interaction that can happen in face to face learning situations seems to be lost. So read the Learning is Socially Interactive handout. Given that we understand that learning is enhanced by social interaction, how can we incorporate that into this class?

2) How can we (as a class) incorporate good social learning practices in our class?

I have posted a communication model for you. It is a transactional model of communication.

3) Explain why this model is transactional. Look at the Context element. What are some examples of how those factors might influence a communication interaction? Look at the Communicator elements (Culture, Education, Experiences, Moods, Emotions) give some examples of how these factors influence your interactions.

4) Why do we study communication?

Sociology, Analytical Paper using Marxist theories about Beanie Babies

Sociology, Analytical Paper using Marxist theories about Beanie Babies

Declare your thesis statement for the final analytical paper. Be sure that it contains a clear statement of what you will argue that delineates the main points to be addressed.

This paper is a critical analysis of your topic in popular culture. The goal is to demonstrate what you have learned from studying popular culture by not simply “consuming” it but by interpreting it.

  • First, define your topic in pop culture clearly for your reader. Your topic: Beanie Babies. Your opening paragraph or two can be a direct thesis or they can have a creative “hook” to bring in your reader and introduce the subject. But the opening should explain the importance of the topic; and it should conclude with a clear thesis statement that tells the reader what the main point of your analysis will be.
  • Second, begin your analysis of the topic by doing the following:
    • Apply a theory or concept from your readings that helps you to interpret your subject. These theories and concepts include: Marxist theories of false consciousness, commodity fetishism, and alienation.
    • Demonstrate the larger cultural lessons we can learn from your pop cultural artifact or phenomenon by looking at its message, form, and context. In particular, please explain how it promotes, reinforces, or challenges certain dominant values in the United States or how it is a subject of debate in public discourse.
    • Be sure to use examples. Evidence is everything!

You need to employ at least 3 academic sources (articles from peer-reviewed journals; books; Course Reader). Focus on the course material. This assignment demonstrates what you’ve learned from SOC 325. Please stay away from Wikipedia, online dictionaries, blogs, news media, etc.
