GCU ELM 350 Standards-Based Learning Objectives

GCU ELM 350 Standards-Based Learning Objectives

Teachers of social studies and the arts are challenged to develop standards-based curriculum that integrates current local and global issues into instruction. Doing so engages students in applying content knowledge to real-world problems. To develop a standards-based curriculum, educators must first research grade-level specific state academic standards for social studies in order to align learning objectives with required learning standards.

The Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels are an extension of the Know, Understand, and Do guidelines and activate complexity in thinking, rather than just focusing on content.

There are four levels that allow students to engage with content in various ways:

Use the “Unwrapping the Standards” template to complete this assignment.

Part 1: Video Evaluation

View a social studies activity video segment found in the Topic Materials. In 250-500 words, reflect on the following:

  • Has the teacher modeled academic language and critical thinking skills while addressing social studies standards and current events? Provide examples for why or why not.
  • What questioning strategies does the teacher incorporate into social studies instruction to increase students’ critical thinking skills and depth of knowledge?

Part 2: Writing Learning Objectives

Using the standards from your state, select one social studies standard and one art standard. Write one measurable learning objective to the standard for each DOK level using “Students will be able to” language.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

In this paper, youwilldescribe a person, object, or eventusingonlyempiricallyverifiablefacts

In this paper, you will describe a person, object, or event using only empirically verifiable facts. The objective of the paper is to convince your reader to see the person, object, or event in either a positive or negative light while ensuring that your paper remains completely free of any evaluative language

Instruction:

Choose a person, object, or event that you find interesting and that you can readily research. It is better if you choose a topic about which people already have a strong opinion that differs from your own. For instance, most people like chocolate ice cream, but perhaps you hate chocolate ice cream. If so, chocolate ice cream would make a good topic for this paper. After you choose a topic, begin to compile facts about your topic that will help you to show your topic in either a negative or positive light. To show chocolate ice cream in a negative light, for instance, you might look for a medical study that links chocolate ice cream to mad cow disease, or find evidence that an unpopular person such as Richard Nixon ate chocolate ice cream every day. Likewise, if you find a report concluding that chocolate ice cream cures pancreatic cancer, it may be wise to omit those findings from your paper. Either way, you want to provide only empirically verifiable information about chocolate ice cream. At no point should you disclose to your reader your own opinion of chocolate or any other kind of ice cream. In other words, persuade us to dislike chocolate ice cream merely by providing negative information about it that you have strategically organized to maximize persuasive effect.

1) Your opening paragraph must be a vivid description of the topic of your paper.

2) The introduction of your paper must include a preview of the paper.

3) The body of your paper should deliver on the promises made in your preview, and each section of the body should begin with a preview of that section.

4) Your paper should feature a conclusion that briefly summarizes the paper.
