Creative Process of Creating and Interpreting Cultural Artifacts (6 page(s) or 1800 Words, 0 slides)

Creative Process of Creating and Interpreting Cultural Artifacts (6 page(s) or 1800 Words, 0 slides)

Select an artifact that interests you and conduct a conversation about it with another person. Then, incorporate that dialogue to write about how artists collaborate and influence each other\’s work.

Introduction

You can’t live through a day without making an impact on the world. And what’s most important is to think about the impact of your actions on the world around you.

– Jane Goodall, primatologist and anthropologist

Think for a moment and try to remember the last time that a piece of art—a book, a movie, a song, a painting, or any other work—made you cry. Perhaps, they were tears of joy. Or, maybe you were sad because a certain lyric reminded you of a painful moment from your past, or because you could relate to a character’s struggles. In any case, the art made an impact on your life, just as it was designed to do. Understanding the positive and negative impacts we can have on others through art and other artifacts is a critical part of working together successfully.

In this assessment, you will continue to strengthen your self- and social-awareness skills and relationship-building skills as you explore how the humanities can be used to impact others, why it’s important to reflect on that impact, and how understanding your impact can help you collaborate with your co-workers and peers.

What you see depends not only on what you look at, but also on where you look from.

– James Deacon, artist

Through this course, you have studied what it means to be human. And you’ve explored the unique ways people all over the world express themselves and their different perspectives through art, culture, music, religion, literature, and more. Along the way, you’ve also learned how important it is to broaden your own perspective, so you can think and act appropriately in different cultural environments and better collaborate and solve problems with peers, colleagues, and co-workers whose experiences and perspectives are different from your own.

In this assessment, you’ll look back at all you’ve learned so far and discover how these same concepts and skills will allow you to continue to broaden your perspective, collaborate with others, and solve problems as you encounter new cultures and ideas outside of the classroom.

Many of humanity’s finest achievements—such as the International Space Station, the Allied victories in the Second World War, and the founding of the United Nations—were made possible by people of different cultures coming together to pursue a shared goal. In fact, history shows us that when diverse groups collaborate, they are likely to achieve more than groups that are less diverse(Page, 2008) With this in mind, you\’ll continue to strengthen your relationship-building skills by exploring how nations and cultures have collaborated throughout history. And you’ll consider how collaboration can help you to achieve success in your own workplace and community.

Overview

This assessment allows you to practice your problem-solving skills and self- and social-awareness skills as you reflect on the nature of the creative process. In this assessment, you will:

  • Explore how your own experiences influenced your choice of a cultural artifact. Did you choose a literary work, film, song, or painting? Explore ways in which your personal experiences and cultural context might have influenced that choice. This allows you to think critically about our perspectives are shaped by cultural context.
  • Examine the creative process then use the information to analyze your selected artifact. Do you think there are fundamental differences in the creative process when it is a collaborative process rather than a solitary one? Also apply what you’ve learned from your research into the life of the artist, or the artists working together, who created the artifact.
  • Explain how the artist\’s cultural and personal experiences can be detected in the cultural artifact. No matter what profession you work in, creative thinking is a path to success. Reflecting on the creative process and learning about what inspires others will help you better access your creative potential.
  • Expand your interpretive skills and deepen your understanding of the practice of interpreting the achievements of human creativity. Exploring similarities between the creative and the interpretive processes will give you new insights into both, and thereby improve your competencies in creative problem-solving.

Preparation

Select an artifact that you would like to use as the subject of your writing. You are free to choose from any type of artifact, which can range from things like literary works, film, musical pieces, or artwork. After you have your artifact selected, find a person with whom you can have a 10–15 minute dialog about your artifact. This person might be a family member, friend, co-worker, et cetera. You may hold your conversation in person, over the phone, or virtually; the choice is yours.

Your conversation should be informal and relaxed—we want you to have fun with it. And here are some ideas on how to guide your conversation:

  1. Show or play the artifact to the other person and allow them to examine it.
  2. Share your reasons for why you chose this artifact and why it resonates with you.
  3. Provide a few interesting details about the artist.
  4. Invite the person to share their thoughts about the artifact and reactions to anything you shared.

Additionally, unlike the previous assessments, you won\’t have a template to use. Your writing should follow an academic format and flow.

Instructions

In this assessment, you will write an academic piece that addresses the prompts listed below.?????:

  • Step 1:Reflect on how culture and artistic expressions influence human thought and behavior.
    • Provide insights on how this artifact might influence people’s thinking and behavior in the future.
  • Step 2: Explain how the artifact reflects both collaborative and individual efforts.
    • Describe the path, journey, or process the artist used to create the artifact and discuss the collaboration or influences that happened between the artist and others.
    • Describe the ways the artist put his or her interpretation and creativity to shape and craft the final artifact.
    • Explain how the artist\’s cultural and personal experiences can be detected in the cultural artifact.
    • Provide specific examples to support your response.
  • Step 3: Relate how the creative process uses problem-solving, relationship-building, and self- and social-awareness skills.
    • Describe the creative process the artist used and provide examples of how the artist used problem-solving, relationship-building, and self- and social-awareness skills to help him or her to complete the artifact.
    • Provide an example of how you can use the artist\’s process and methods to support your endeavors. If you have had a similar experience, you may use your experience to illustrate the connection between these concepts and skills.
    • Provide specific examples to support your descriptions.
  • Step 4: Explain how the interpretive process can be a collaborative process.
    • Identify how people in a group sharing ideas, thoughts, experiences, et cetera, could influence one another in the course of connecting with or interpreting the artifact. Provide a specific example of when you experienced this.
      • If so, how did it change? Provide specific details.
      • If not, why do you think this is?
    • Describe your conversation with another person about your artifact.
      • What did you enjoy or not enjoy about the conversation?
      • Did the other person point out something you didn\’t notice? What was it?
      • Did you connect with the other person and find some shared experience through your conversation about the artist or artifact?
      • Did this also uncover something new you learned about yourself or the other person?
      • Did you connect with the other person by finding some shared experience through your discussion about the artist or artifact?
      • Did this also uncover something new you learned about yourself or the other person?
    • Provide specific examples to support your response.

Writing About Characterization

After reading “The Father”(opens in a new tab) and Federigo’s Falcon(opens in a new tab), select one of the four characters to write a paragraph about which explains why you believe that character is either flat or round and static or dynamic. Use the outline below to help you construct your paragraph.
I. Topic sentence (For example, “The character of ______________ is both flat and static.”) a. Construct a sentence that starts with a transition and then identifies the first type of character listed in your topic sentence. (For example, “First of all, she is flat, meaning she is not a well-developed character.”) i. Then, identify an element of character from the characterization chart that supports your above claim.
ii. Next, give one specific example (i.e. from the “Evidence from the Text” column of your chart) from the text to support your claim in “i,”iii. Next explain why this specific example supports your claim (use the information you recorded in the last column of your characterization charts to help you with this point.
b. Now transition to your second main point, which is the second character type that you listed in your topic sentence. This sentence is similar to the one that you wrote for “a.” i. Then, identify an element of character from the characterization chart that supports your above claim that the character is either flat/round or static/dynamic.
ii. Next, give one specific example (i.e. from the “Evidence from the Text” column of your chart) from the text to support your claim in “i.” iii. White Papers Question

The final product for this course will be a final paper completed individually for 30 points total towards your final grade. Students will choose one of two final paper options.

Option 1: Gender analysis of media content

You will write a 5-7 page paper analyzing a piece of media of your choice. This can include a TV show, book series, podcast, video game, movie, comic book, or anything you can identify as media content. Thoroughly describe relevant components of the media piece before/as you analyze (you do not have to describe in detail the entire thing, only what is relevant to your paper/the course concepts).

Questions to consider:

What are the gendered characteristics/traits/behaviors of the characters?

What is the content broadly saying about gender, power, and hierarchical arrangements?

How are sexualities presented in the media piece? Does the media piece assume heteronormativity? Explain.

Does the content exemplify identities/behaviors/characteristics that operate outside of the gender binary? If so, are there any notable reactions?

Does this content succeed/fail to represent an intersectional understanding of identity? Why or why not?

Are there any examples of gendered institutions within the media piece? If so, describe and explain the institution and how it is gendered.

Paper requirements: 5 key concepts from the course must be used throughout your paper with citations. You should use 12-point size normal font (Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial, etc.), double spacing, and APA formatting including references.

Option 2: Prompt response

You will write a 5-7 page paper responding to 3 prompts of your choice. Answer all of the questions in the prompt for full credit.

Required:

Prompt 1: How does our understanding of sexualities connect to the way that we “do” gender (in other words, how are gender and sexualities connected)? Explain heteronormativity. How does heteronormativity drive dominant U.S. culture? What are the impacts of this? How have groups resisted discrimination based on sexualities?

Optional (choose 2):

Prompt 2: What is your definition of gender? How does this compare to the book’s definition? How is U.S. culture gendered? How has the way that we understand gender changed throughout time? Propose an example sociological study using an intersectional understanding of gender (propose a theoretical background, general methods that might be appropriate, and research hypotheses).

Prompt 3: Reflect on your overall experience in the course. What was your perspective of sex, gender, & sexualities before taking this course? Have these perspectives changed? If so, how? How is your daily life gendered? Provide an example of an experience in your classes this semester (it does not have to be in this class) that relates to concepts from this course.

Prompt 4: Do you think it is possible to take gender out of the way that we organize society? Imagine a world that does not organize around gender. What would this world look like? What might be some prominent features of today’s society that would change? Would the gender binary still exist? What would be the effects of this new social organization?

Prompt 5: Choose one of the weeks 11/12/13 topics (work, family, or politics). Summarize how the topic can be analyzed as a social institution. Explain how the topic is gendered (you can use examples from the book, lecture, or outside sources). Then, provide a suggestion for social change within the institution (what steps need to be taken to create more gender equity within work/family/politics?).

Paper requirements: 5 key concepts from the course must be used throughout your paper with citations. Identify which prompt you are responding to at the beginning of each response (example: Prompt 2). You should use 12-point size normal font (Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial, etc.), double spacing, and APA formatting including references.

Requirements: 5-7 pages

The final version of this paper is due on Sunday

The final version of this paper is due on Sunday

Other Question

The final version of this paper is due on Sunday of unit eight. I would appeal to your better nature and ask you to try to turn it in earlier than that though. The final draft is worth 260 points and is a major component of the portfolio.

For this paper, you should explore an organization’s communication in a crisis or change situation. Begin with an organizational crisis or change situation—school shootings, chemical or oil spill, bankruptcy, change in CEO, etc. Here are some examples of papers you might do:

  • study the metaphors the President uses when he speaks on a major crisis like the BP oil spill
  • study the corporate response to a company’s recall of a drug or a product
  • study an athlete’s (or actor’s or company’s) apology for wrong doing
  • study the speeches of a new CEO

The list is really endless. Essentially, you pick some communication and analyze it using a method or theory from the lectures, text, or your own research. The topic you pick will lead you to a method of analysis. A number of possible ways of analyzing communication exist. For example, Bill Benoit at the University of Missouri discusses image restoration (how do people who have screwed up get back in good standing with their peers/publics). Coombs, Seeger, Sellnow and Ulmer often write a crisis communication.
In the paper, you should develop an effective argument about the implications of a communicative act. Avoid making obvious claims–show your reader something important that they didn’t already know.
Follow the format outlined in the handouts and our discussions. The information below should serve as a guide.

This paper should be at least 10 complete pages long– on to the eleventh page is better. It should be typed in a 10-12 character-per-inch font, double spaced with one-inch margins. As a paper, it should have an introduction which sets up the paper and a conclusion that reviews your main ideas. Use section headings, transitions between sections, and previews and reviews in each section. You must use at least eight sources in the paper. Remember to use APA style. Spell-check and grammar-check is recommended. Papers with many errors hurt your credibility and your ability to communicate.

Realize that we are writing the paper in stages. You will write three papers and combine them into this one final paper, so 1) don’t panic and 2) don’t forget to go back to the drafts and edit the paper to make it flow.

Guidelines

  • Introduction
    1. Attention getter.
    2. Identify the communication you will be studying.
    3. Explain why it’s important to look at this event.
    4. Preview the sections of the paper.
  • Background
    1. Give background on when, where, and to whom the communication was delivered.
    2. Describe the communication—summarize its main points.
    3. Discuss the crisis or event that made the communication necessary.
    4. Explain the circumstances surrounding the act/communication.
    5. Explain the barriers/expectations the piece faces.
    6. Describe the speaker,
    7. Summarize at least three articles about the communication/speaker.
    8. Explain in more detail why the text/communication is interesting (expand on your introduction).
    9. State your thesis or main argument about how we should see the communication.
  • Theory/Methodology
    1. Explain your theoretical perspective.
    2. Summarize at least three other studies done with your method.
    3. Explanation of why this method works with the communication you are exploring
    4. Explain what standards are used for evaluation? Effects? Truth? Ethics? Artistry?
  • Analysis/Evaluation
    1. Identify your thesis. Phrase it as how, using your methodology as a lens, we now “see” your artifact/communication.
    2. Develop at least three arguments which support the thesis/research question.
    3. Give at least three examples (often quotes from the artifact) to support each of the arguments.
    4. Using criteria established in your theory section, what can we learn about this piece? This speaker? These strategies? The consequences of using these strategies?
    5. What conclusion or assumptions about the rhetor or the artifact can be made?
  • Conclusion
    1. What is the general argument of your study?
    2. What has this study contributed to the study of organizational communication?
    3. What are some possible areas for future study?
    4. What should the reader take away from this work?

SOCY325 Week 6 discussion

This week asks you to look at many different institutions in our society specifically as gendered institutions. Referring directly to the learning resources for this week, as a response to this post, take a moment to synthesize what you have learned:

  1. What are some of the major threads that connect these institutions in terms of gender, gender expectations, or effects on gender?
  2. Are there any common problems that need to be solved?
  3. Why is it important to consider intersectionality whenever we look at gender in institutions? Give at least two examples from the learning resources.
  4. Is the role of gender in politics connected to finding those solutions? If so, how?
  5. Finally, choose one or two of the gendered institutions we learn about this week (education, politics, criminal justice, military, healthcare, religion), and dive deeper into these questions:
    • How do expectations about gender affect that institution?
    • How does that institution affect gender?
    • What are the major hurdles to achieving gender equality in that institution?
    • What would gender equality look like in that institution?
    • And, what do you see as the major work that institution needs to do to achieve gender equality?

For this assignment you should watch a movie

For this assignment you should watch a movie

For this assignment you should watch a movie, or re-watch a movie you remember seeing in the past.  In any number of movies I can think of there is a leader who, by articulating a vision and a challenge to others to see it happen, convinces followers to join them in trying to achieve something. The leader then organizes the activities and motivates followers to help the entire organization achieve the vision. There are plenty of sports movies (e.g., Coach Carter, Remember the Titans), action movies (Oceans 11, The Italian Job), and animated movies (e.g., Toy Story, A Bugs Life), where some leader(s) create a compelling vision for others to follow and lead others to success.  In the paper, take 500=750 words to describe the basic plot of the movie (in your own words!).  Then, for the rest of the paper, using some of the terms and ideas described in the chapters, explain how the leader(s) contributed to success. Be sure to reference both the movie, and sections of the textbook chapters you refer to. Feel free to use other sources of information to further understand and describe theories. For example, the Path-Goal Theory may be a very powerful concept for understanding a particular leader’s success, but since this is covered in less than one page in the text book, it may be necessary to access a few more sources to fully apply this theory.

This paper should be around 1800-2500 words, with proper referencing of all sources used. I recommend using the APA format for the paper and references, although I am not a stickler for following every detail of the official formating guidelines. The library or the writing center can provide assistance if you have any questions. There are also a number of sources of information regarding this standard, including http://www.apastyle.org/learn/tutorials/basics-tutorial.aspx and http://www.csun.edu/~hbsoc126/soc4/Writing%20Sample%20and%20Refernce%20Guide%20as%201%20file.pdf. As described in some detail in the academic integrity section of the syllabus, it is very important that all sources of information used receive proper attribution in papers.

Submit the paper in Blackboard using the .doc, .docx, or .rtf format. Blackboard is set up to accept two attempts, because sometimes an individual will first upload the wrong version, or right after submitting will remember that something important needed to be included.  If more than one attempt is uploaded, only the second one will be graded. Papers are typically graded in the order received, and after the submission deadline has passed. However, sometimes I will start grading papers as they come in, prior to the deadline.

Other Question

Select Journal Articles about Small Group Communication

Each unit you will select one journal article. It should be based on journal articles addressing small group communication from communication journals accessed through Ebso’s Communication Source.Links to an external site. The articles should be reporting research that was done by the authors of the articles. Do not select theoretical pieces or arguments for or against a position.

Journal Article Examples

Below are some example ideas for journal article selection:

  • An article about decision making in juries might help lawyers shape their arguments in their closing.
  • An article about why bystanders don’t step forward to help women being raped might help dorm directors develop better training programs for their residents and help college administrators better deal with this problem.
  • An article exploring why teens in “popular” groups bully other students could help parents understand what their daughter’s posts on Facebook are doing to her peers and help them help her stop bullying.

Writing Your Paper

For this writing assignment, your job is to make this research understandable by and applicable to “average people” as defined by your target audience. At the bottom of your paper, indicate:

  • Who your audience is
  • The audience’s basic characteristics
  • How you think the audience could use this information.

Each paper should be approximately 500-600 words. Put a title at the top of the first page and use 10-12 character-per-inch font for the body type. Use one-inch margins.
