Science at Home Handout

Parents are their children’s first educators and often spend time developing their children’s love of learning with activities done at home. However, science is often overlooked as many parents are unsure how to reinforce scientific learning. When teachers partner with families, students’ motivation to learn is increased, learning is reinforced, and curiosity about science topics is encouraged.

For this assignment, create a 500-750 word Science at Home handout to give to families showing them ways they can be involved with their children’s science learning at home. Select an age range/grade and 2-3 science standards to focus on.

Include the following in your handout:

  • Brief overview of science standards/topics addressed at the selected age range/grade level.
  • Explanation of how important the home-school connection is for children in learning science concepts.
  • At least 2-3 strategies to incorporate science in everyday home activities (i.e., cooking, cleaning, yard work).
  • Minimum of 2-3 suggested activities for families to do together to promote science instruction.
  • Describe 1-2 ways in which at-home technology can support children’s science learning.
  • Specify 2-5 resources for families/community resources and events to promote science learning.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Requirements: 500-750 words

So in the attached sheet I have the standards that I will be using and this is for 4-5 year old students.

The highlighted items on the attached sheet are the things that have to be incorporated into this assignment also be sure to add at least 2 resources. Thank you.

Identify and explain key points throughout out your lifespan (childhood, adolescence, and adulthood)

Identify and explain key points throughout out your lifespan (childhood, adolescence, and adulthood)

Success and School

Prior to beginning this activity, read Chapter 12: School, Work, and Leisure,

In this reflection,

  • Identify and explain key points throughout out your lifespan (childhood, adolescence, and adulthood) that have left an impression on your beliefs about receiving an education.
    • Include at least three experiences: one in childhood, one as a teen, and one as an adult.
    • Identify what led to the events and what effects each event has had on your academic journey or beliefs about earning a degree.
  • Identify factors suggested to be effectors of development, by your weekly reading that align with your experiences (i.e., childcare, preparedness, learning environment). Share only information that you are comfortable with, or you may use another’s experiences or a fictitious example.
    • To successfully do this, add proper citations throughout your writing.

Your journal, this week, should be 400 to 500 words and have an introduction and a conclusion

You should exhibit obvious attention to critical thought and understanding of the content, as demonstrated in Samantha Agoos’s TED-Ed Animation, 5 Tips to Improve Your Critical Thinking (Links to an external site.). You should include citations as needed to support your ideas. As this is your personal reflection about the material this week, your journal should limit the use of quoted material. Proper grammar should be applied,

At a minimum, cite your text to support your assertions within your explanation, but you may also use additional scholarly sources.

Preschool Child

Instructions: Read the following case study and answer the reflective questions. Please provide rationales for your answers. Make sure to provide citations/references for your answers in APA format.

CASE STUDY: Preschool Child: Ricky

Ricky, age 4 years, arrives in the clinic with his mother. Ricky lives with his mother and father, who both work full-time, and his infant sister. Their extended family lives in a different state more than 100 miles away. Both parents are of average height and in good health. Ricky’s mother mentions that Ricky often expresses frustration, particularly in regard to food. Conflict over food occurs every day. Mealtime is a battle to get him to eat, unless his mother feeds him. Ricky’s baby sister seems to tolerate all baby foods but requires her mother to spoon-feed. Ricky’s mother is quite frustrated and concerned that he will become malnourished.

Reflective Questions

1. What additional assessment information would you collect?

2. What questions would you ask, and how would you further explore this issue with the mother?

3. In what ways does the distance of the extended family influence this family’s approach to health promotion?

4. What factors would you consider to determine whether malnourishment is a factor in this family
