Sociology, Analytical Paper using Marxist theories about Beanie Babies
Declare your thesis statement for the final analytical paper. Be sure that it contains a clear statement of what you will argue that delineates the main points to be addressed.
This paper is a critical analysis of your topic in popular culture. The goal is to demonstrate what you have learned from studying popular culture by not simply “consuming” it but by interpreting it.
First, define your topic in pop culture clearly for your reader. Your topic: Beanie Babies. Your opening paragraph or two can be a direct thesis or they can have a creative “hook” to bring in your reader and introduce the subject. But the opening should explain the importance of the topic; and it should conclude with a clear thesis statement that tells the reader what the main point of your analysis will be.
Second, begin your analysis of the topic by doing the following:
Apply a theory or concept from your readings that helps you to interpret your subject. These theories and concepts include: Marxist theories of false consciousness, commodity fetishism, and alienation.
Demonstrate the larger cultural lessons we can learn from your pop cultural artifact or phenomenon by looking at its message, form, and context. In particular, please explain how it promotes, reinforces, or challenges certain dominant values in the United States or how it is a subject of debate in public discourse.
Be sure to use examples. Evidence is everything!
You need to employ at least 3 academic sources (articles from peer-reviewed journals; books; Course Reader). Focus on the course material. This assignment demonstrates what you’ve learned from SOC 325. Please stay away from Wikipedia, online dictionaries, blogs, news media, etc.
Prepare a formal research paper regarding the selected issue. The assignment must be between 5-7 pages excluding quotations, in-text citations, cover page, and Works Cited page(s).
The essay should address the following:
Who is the republican and democrat candidate running in your US House district?
Provide some background information about them. (Their education, occupation, have they run for office before, are they the incumbent, has either candidate been controversial.)
Explain how each candidate addresses the specific issue that you selected.
What are the main arguments around this issue?
Do you agree or disagree with either candidate about that issue? Explain why.

IDENTIFYING YOUR U.S. HOUSE DISTRICT AND ISSUE
Enter the address you’re registered to vote at this website.*
Once you hit submit, you should find your US House district number on the left-hand side. The website shows who is currently serving your house district.
It is likely, your current congressperson (incumbent) is running for reelection.
There is usually a link on their official campaign website that says “Issues.” Read through each candidates’ website and start comparing them.
Here is an example of Congressperson Roy Chip’s Campaign Website and it’s Issues page. He represents US House District 21. With incumbents, it is important to distinguish their campaign website from their official congressional website.
Select ONE issue that is important to you. You will be writing about this issue for your essay and comparing how each candidate stands on this issue.
Read some online news articles about the candidates running in your US House district. Local and state newspapers are good place to start, like Dallas Morning News or Texas Tribune.
GATHERING SOURCES
Conduct research to locate at least two academic journal articles (aka: peer-reviewed or scholarly sources) that specifically address the issue you selected.
The articles must be no more than ten (10) years old.
The article must have more than five (5) pages of actual content (without graphs, charts, footnotes, citations, etc.).
Books, dissertations, and theses will not count toward this minimum research requirement.
Carefully choose sources that provide a variety of perspectives on your selected topic. In addition to the minimum research requirements, you should use high quality sources for essential current events information relevant to your topic. Write a discussion topic following the given instructions:
According to Kirk (2016), The essence of “Formulating Your Brief” is to “identify the context in which your work will be undertaken and then define its aims: it is the who, what, where, when and how.” It could be formal or informal as any project you think you must make it. This phase is where you create a vision for your work.

PPD Team Presentation – Collaborative Governance as it Relates to Police Abolition
1. I need you to create another presentation just like the one you did before regarding the 1. Shui-Yan Tang and Daniel A. Mazmanian (2010) “Understanding Collaborative Governance from the Structural Choice Politics, IAD, and Transaction Cost Perspectives,” Working Paper.
2. However, the professor did not like the collaborative governance example for Newport Beach and instead wants it to be on collaborative governance as it relates to the Police Abolition situation in Minneapolis.
3. Attached you can find all the required guidelines for the submission, but I also need to you address these specific topics thoroughly and clearly.
– Address the ideas of collaborative governance, IAD framework, structural choice politics, cartels, transaction cost analysis as the key ideas of the presentation, as it relates to the Police Abolition movement in Minneapolis.
– A huge point for this is that we need to address the role of non-profits. For example look into how one of the nonprofits mentioned in the articles I provided you with is trying to implement change in policy or defunding. Try to make the presentation about exploring the concepts and key ideas mentioned above and applying them to more specific institutions working on the idea of defunding/police abolition on a smaller scale.
4. When linking the reading to the specific policy issue or public organization you choose, you should keep the following in mind:
a. What key facets of the policy issues or public organization connect to the reading?
b. How does theory come to life in the policy issues or public organization you have chosen?
c. How can this policy issue or public organization help us learn the 3 to 5 key ideas from the reading you have identified?
d. Are there any gaps, inaccuracies, or other problems you see in the reading? Is this reflected in the real-world context you have chosen to examine?
5. When developing your 5 to 7 key ideas from the reading and how they link to your specific policy issue or public organization, remember to avoid making your presentation a mechanical summary of the reading. The goal of this exercise is to build your critical thinking skills and to develop you understanding of how theory connects to the real world. You should make attempts at novel insights and aim to join theory to practice. You MUST have a 3-10 PowerPoint slides to accompany your presentation.
6. After presenting your 5 to 7 key ideas and how they connect to the policy issue or public organization you have chosen, the team should raise 1 to 2 questions for class discussion. You are encouraged to use creative ways to organize the discussion around your key ideas and related real-world application.
7. Include a related video (3 min or less) from a news organization, think tank, or other credible source that relates to your presentation.
8. The evaluation of presentation will be based on the following criteria:
a. Thoughtfulness: creativity, insights, etc. (the key is to go beyond any mechanical summary) (5 points)
b. Delivery, i.e., whether each team member explain the ideas clearly and effectively; whether presentation guidelines are followed (5 points)
c. Quality of the discussion questions, and whether they trigger fruitful discussion (5 points).
