Assignment – Interest Groups

As we discussed, there are many different interest groups that exist in the United States today. For this activity, you will choose one such group and do some research to figure out what it does and how it does it. Follow these steps:

  • Select an interest group from the list. If you’d like to do a different group that is not listed, please get approval from your instructor before you begin.
  • Research the web and other resources for information about your chosen interest group. Be sure to check out their official homepage for the most reputable information. You will need a total of 3 sources in all.
  • Find information about the group’s beliefs – what do the stand for? – and how they go about supporting their interests – do they lobby Congress, encourage grassroots letter writing campaigns, organize protests, etc.?
  • Write a 1-2 page essay summarizing your group’s beliefs and actions. Be sure to also include your source list of at least 3 sources.

Once you’ve completed your essay, submit it to your instructor.

Point value: 50 points

Grading Rubric:

  • Topic is an interest group from the list, or other pre-approved topic – 5 points
  • Bibliography of at least 3 research sources is included – 10 points
  • Essay is between 1-2 full pages in length – 5 points
  • Essay factually and thoroughly explains the role of selected interest group, their issue of concern, involvement in lobbying, etc. – 30 points

Students will choose a co-culture within a country and create a 5 minute presentation for the class identifying the beliefs, values, norms, and practices of this group. You may select one of your own co-cultures for this assignment. Evaluate your experience with the dominant culture and the co-culture, and compare them with the 7 dimensions of cultural difference. How do the dimensional differences between cultures affect communication?

Ensure that you get approval on your topic from the instructor.Two secondary sources (besides the e-text) are required. Acceptable sources include textbooks and academic journal/research articles. You will submit your presentation visuals and presentation notes. No paper is required for this assignment.

Through a review of the literature, evaluate the social, political, and historical milestones and trends relative to the identified problem. You should also review interventions that have been attempted in other communities and their success, or lack thereof.

IV. Needs Analysis: 1PAGE This section should include your analysis of the information you gathered on the community. This will provide the conclusions you have drawn from thinking about the findings you described in the preceding section. Based on your assessment of the community and comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the problem: • What is the magnitude of the problem in the community? • What resources and interventions currently exist in the community? • Provide a description of the impact the current resources and interventions are having on the population. Are they effective? Why or why not? • What are the obstacles that exist in the community that prevent impacting or addressing the problem? • Why is this problem one that the community needs to address? What are the demographics of the individuals affected by the problem?
