1) Discuss: What does it mean to be a “woman of color”?

2) Discuss: What is intersectionality? (use Crenshaw from the video) Why is intersectionality an essential term for understanding the experiences of women of color?

3): Provide an example of an issue affecting women and, using the term “intersectionality,” discusses how women of color experience this issue differently from white women. And then respond:

This week we are going to start reading about Intersectionality, which is a major tool of analysis that we use in WOC feminisms. These first two weeks you will be referring back to the entire semester and I will be expecting you to gain mastery of these terms and ideas by the end of the semester in your final paper.

I want you to take notice of how Nash’s version of Intersectionality builds upon Crenshaw’s origin of the theory.

What is different?

I also want you to take note that the origin of this theory is in Black Feminism. Why is this important? We know women of color’s labor is always erased. We will dive further into issues such as colorism in the WOC community a bit later, but for now I just want you to take note that this theory came from Black women.

Intersectionality will be the major tool of analysis that you will be using throughout the semester. What does this mean? It means we will be using this theory as if it were a pair of glasses and we will see the world through these glasses. In the case of WOC feminisms, what we are looking for is understanding privilege, power, and oppression.

Specific to this course, we will be looking primarily at how gender and race impact the lived experiences of women of color. We will also get to add in other variables throughout the semester, such as being LGBTQ+, disabled, fat, transgender, a mother, and so on.

Provide a brief overview of Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s child and adolescent cognitive developmental theories.

Jean Piaget is probably the most influential theorist in the cognitive development realm. His work has informed American educational practices since the early 1900s. Another key cognitive theorist in the realm is Lev Vygotsky. Interestingly, Vygotsky and Piaget were contemporaries (both were born in 1896), but for many years, Piaget’s theory dominated. The fact that Vygotsky died at age 37, while Piaget lived to be 84, might be part of that explanation. But Vygotsky’s ideas gained traction in the 1980s when educators began to question long held Piagetian ideas. Nevertheless, both theories are important to the study of cognitive development. In your initial post of 400 words minimum,

  • Provide a brief overview of Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s child and adolescent cognitive developmental theories.
  • Compare and contrast these theories as they relate to child and adolescent development by identifying at least one commonality in the two theories and two major conceptual differences (Table 7.2 in your textbook will be useful here).
