M4 Unit 12 Rough Draft of Research Paper Instructions
Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to help you organize your argument and the evidence you have to support it, and to receive feedback that you can use to create a polished final draft at the end of the course.
Instructions
A draft is just that, a rough sketch of what you want to say in your final paper. It is an opportunity to receive feedback from your instructor on your work, but it is also an opportunity for you to get your thoughts down on paper, move away from them, come back with fresh eyes and revise. A draft need not be polished or perfect – it should be rough and that’s okay. The biggest mistake you can make with a draft is getting stuck with writer’s block because you think the draft isn’t good enough. Drafts aren’t supposed to be perfect – they are supposed to help you think about your work, and let others give you some ideas on how to improve.
Your final historical research paper should include an introduction with a clear thesis statement, at least five paragraphs (probably more) that address topics that support your claims, and a strong conclusion that summarizes your argument. Attach your final bibliography (not annotated) at the end and include a cover page (in all formats) with your name, date, and the title of the paper. The title should be more than the topic, and should give the reader a sense of what the paper is about. Some examples:
o Paul Revere: Statesman and Craftsman
o The Salem Witch Trials: Fear and Superstition on the Frontier
Make sure each paragraph contains at least one quote or other supporting evidence from your research, and that you use all your sources – primary and secondary (including the scholarly journal article). Primary sources do provide the best evidence, and a variety of sources provide event better evidence than a reliance on one or two sources. Always extrapolate quotations. Follow quotes with your own analysis or comments and explain how that evidence supports your argument.
Quotations should be no more than two – three lines long. People tend to skip over longer quotes. All quotes must be cited in Chicago/Turabian style. Remember quotations also require a page number if available in all the formats. Even though quotations are important as support, the majority of your paper (roughly 85 percent) should by your own words of analysis.
You may use illustrations or photographs as sources, but these should not be included in the body of the paper. If you decide that you must include these images, they should be attached as appendices and those pages do not count toward your page length or word count.
Your completed essay must be 6-8 pages in length, double-spaced, written using 12-point font, 1″ margins, and Chicago/Turabian stylecitations.
One final reminder – Drafts need not be perfect, as you will edit and revise it. It is better to turn something in for feedback, than to turn nothing in and have no information on how to improve the paper late.

After reviewing this list and the required resources for this module, consider which indicators would be most important for an industry of your choosing. Provide background information on the industry you chose, and why you think the KPIs you chose are important. Support your list with resources.
Be sure to post an initial, substantive response by Thursday at 11:59 p.m. MST and respond to two or more peers with substantive responses by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MST. A substantive initial post answers the question presented completely and/or asks a thoughtful question pertaining to the topic. Substantive peer responses ask a thoughtful question pertaining to the topic and/or answers a question (in detail) posted by another student or the instructor.
Write your “leadership autobiography” in which you reflect on your past and present leadership experiences. Do not submit your life story, this only pertains to your leadership experiences.
Refer to Chapter 1, Introduction, page 11, Table 1.2 Six Bases of Power (French & Raven, 1962). Use each of the powers in your narrative by applying them to your leadership experiences.

A word document (no more than 2 pages) containing your “leadership autobiography” following items 1 to 3, above. You should format your paper according to APA 7th edition style. Use an appropriate title page, headings, in-text citations, paragraphs, references page, etc. Not sure how? All of you have probably read quite a bit about the world’s wealthiest man—Bill Gates. But some of you are probably not nearly as familiar with Bill Gates’s main rival and world’s seventh wealthiest man, former Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. Ellison recently retired as Chief Executive officer (CEO) but is still active as the chair of Oracle’s board of directors. Unlike Gates, who is relatively reserved, Ellison is known for his extravagant lifestyle and boastful interviews.
The rivalry between Ellison and Gates is legendary, but not quite as much is known about Ellison’s leadership style. He has been described as a “jerk,” and his managerial style has been described as “take no prisoners.” While he is unquestionably a powerful leader, he has also been criticized for spending a lot of time playing golf while leaving many leadership duties to his subordinates.
For this assignment, read up on leadership traits, leadership behaviors, and leadership styles in the required background materials. Then read up on Larry Ellison and find as much as you can about his personality and leadership style. Finally, try to apply what you’ve read in the required background materials about leadership traits, behaviors, and styles to what you found out about Larry Ellison.

Once you are finished with your research on Ellison and have thoroughly reviewed the background materials on leadership traits, behaviors, and styles, write a 3-page paper (excluding title and references pages) to include 3 scholarly sources addressing the questions below. For each answer, make sure to cite at least one of the Case Assignment articles listed on this page as well as one of the required textbook chapters from the background materials from Hiriyappa (2009), or Bauer & Erdogan (2012).

Be sure to cite and reference (using APA Style) a minimum of 3 scholarly sources listed in the Course Materials and Bibliography (Module 1 Required and Optional Reading List), or in the Module 1 Background Page: Required and Optional Readings.
