Dialect Discrimination in the courtroom

Research suggests that using a nonstandard dialect in the courtroom may have detrimental effects on a speaker’s position in the courtroom due to dialect discrimination. For example, Rachel Jeantel, who is trilingual, spoke a nonstandard dialect of American English during her testimony as a key witness for the prosecution in the trial of Robert Zimmerman (the man who killed Trayvon Martin). Rickford (2016) argues that Rachel Jeantel’s dialect interacted with jurors’ perceptions about her credibility as a witness in the trial. In this paper I will review research that explores how one’s accent and dialect can affect how a person is treated in the courts, whether the person is the accused or a witness.

2. A paragraph summary of the article, book chapter, or court opinion (in your own words).

For articles or book chapters: What is the article/book chapter about? What is the thesis or aim of the research or chapter? What does the author(s) show in the research (for articles)?

For court opinions: What is the case about? Who are the involved parties? What was the court’s opinion? Which court wrote the opinion (Ex: Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, District Court, etc.)? If it is a Supreme Court Opinion, did it agree with the ruling of the lower courts?

3. A paragraph establishing a connection with your topic—How does the reading relate to your topic? How might you use it in your paper? Was there anything in the reading that was confusing or you’re not sure you understood?

The first step in learning to administer a cognitive assessment instrument is to review its accompanying manual. You may have to do this several times, and you may find that, while following standardized procedures may seem straightforward, it takes time to learn. You may also find that some procedures are more difficult than others. As you read the manual, consider which areas may cause difficulty for you.

For this Discussion, consider any concerns you have regarding your ability to follow standardized procedures. Which specific subtests do you anticipate being most challenging? How will you minimize mistakes as you begin administration?

Post by Day 4 a description of areas of concern you have regarding your ability to adhere to standardized procedures. Next, describe specific subtests you anticipate being challenging to administer and why they might be so. Finally, explain steps you would take to minimize these challenges as you begin administration.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 6 to at least one colleague’s post in one of the following ways:

  • Respond to a colleague who selected a different area of concern.
  • Support a colleague’s concerns by offering one or more resources from which he or she could learn more about standardized procedures.
  • Suggest additional steps that a colleague might take to minimize challenges of a specific subtest.

Your task is to compose a reading reflection connecting class material and topics to current events. Reflection papers must be two pages long double-spaced using size-12 font and standard margins. Papers longer than three pages will be penalized.

A paper that earns full credit must do the following things:

  • 1)Select a relevant topic: the entire range of topics covered between each response paper is fair game. This means that the first reflection paper may discuss the founding, federalism, the constitution, the congress, or some combination of these topics; the second response paper may discuss the presidency and/or the judiciary.

  • 2)Engage course material: you must make it clear that you have read and thought about the relevant readings. This means employing, explaining, and perhaps even challenging relevant terms and concepts.

  • 3)Consider a current event: you must discuss some current event in light of the topics and concepts covered in class.

  • 4)Make an argument: you should articulate what you will be arguing at the outset of your paper and develop this argument in the following two pages. Arguments need to be clear and coherent and must use relevant evidence to substantiate their claims.
  • 5)Use proper style: Your paper must have minimal grammatical and stylistic errors. You also need to cite your sources. I don’t care which citation style you use as long as your citations are consistent. If you’re citing a book, make sure to include the page number; if you’re citing a publication from a website, make sure to include the link. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source for this assignment. Finally, your citations list does not count toward your total paper length.

To complete the Exhibition Critique, you will need to take a trip to a museum virtually.

After you tour the museum, consider the works on view, the organization, the curatorial concerns of exhibition, and write a critique. The paper will be 2 pages in length, with at least 3 outside resources, using MLA format.

The guidelines are attached below.

I’ve added some additional information below that will help. Also I have attached a critique rubric.

This paper is just as much about the curator of the exhibit (if not more so) than the artwork itself. You are going to be looking at a single exhibit within a museum and gallery and focusing on the intentions and goals of the curator of that exhibit. This paper is not about the museum as a whole. Please be sure to consider the role of women in the exhibition. Are they represented? Why? or Why not? What do you think this says about this collection and the museum as a whole?
