Introduction

At age 18, Rose rented her first apartment in the city. Though she had a short commute to work, Rose did not enjoy the chaos and noise of the city. Within months, Rose left her apartment in the city for a small, rural cabin in the country. It was then that Rose began to withdraw from family and friends. Generally, she avoided contact with others. Her co-workers noticed random, obscure drawings on scrap paper at her desk. Additionally, her co-workers noticed other strange behaviors. Frequently, Rose would whisper to herself, appear startled when people approached her desk, and stare at the ceiling at various times throughout the day.

For many clients with disorders such as schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, gender dysphoria, and sexual dysfunctions, the development of mental illness seldom occurs with a singular, defining symptom. Rather, many who experience such disorders show a range of unique symptoms. This range of symptoms may impede upon an individual’s ability to function in daily life. As a result, psychologists address a client’s ability or inability to function in life.

This week, you explore psychotic disorders including schizophrenia. You also explore sexual dysfunctions and apply a diagnosis on a client in the case study

Matters of the Mind: Psychotic Disorders and Schizophrenic Disorders

Psychotic disorders and schizophrenic disorders are some of the most complicated and challenging diagnoses in the DSM. The symptoms of psychotic disorders may appear quite vivid in some clients; whereas, within other clients, symptoms may be barely observable. Additionally, symptoms may overlap among disorders. For example, specific symptoms such as neurocognitive impairments, social problems, and illusions may exist in schizophrenic clients, but are also contributing symptoms for other psychotic disorders.

For this Discussion, consider whether experiences of psychosis-related symptoms are always indicative of a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Think about alternative diagnoses for psychosis-related symptoms.

With these thoughts in mind:

  1. Create a training plan for the organization that includes how you will evaluate training needs, how it fits into the performance management scheme, incentives, evaluation of the training itself, and (in great detail) methods for delivery of said training. (3 pages)
  2. Also include as part of your submission at least one piece of stimulus (a flyer or handout are good suggestions) that would be disseminated as part of a training session (you will want to include your company name and logo on this, of course). (1 page)
  3. Your submission should be in APA format; use 12-point Times New Roman Font with 1” margins all around. Avoid first person, passive voice, ambiguous pronoun references, awkward grammar, and misspellings. Remember, you are representing the organizational leadership in your submission. Write at least 3 pages double spaced, not including the handout (“stimulus”), reference page, or title page (both of which should be included, but do not count toward the 3 page minimum).
  4. Be sure to use the principles of psychology from your chapters and other sources within your submission, and BE EXPLICIT about it.

Identifying Challenges

As with any new skill, practice makes perfect. Some would even say that perfect practice makes perfect. Although you are still a few weeks away from the in-residence portion of this course, it is beneficial for you to identify challenging topics for you related to cognitive assessment. Anticipating these challenges will help you formulate a plan to address them before you are required to demonstrate your assessment skills in person.

To prepare for this Discussion, identify topics or skills from the Learning Resources this week and in other weeks that you found challenging. Think about why these topics are challenging for you. Then consider which topics you hope are covered in more depth in-residence.

Post by Day 4 a description of at least one topic, skill, or assessment from the required readings that you found challenging and explain why. Then, describe any other areas or topics that have been challenging in this course. Finally, explain what topics you hope are covered in more depth in-residence.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ postings.

Respond by Day 6 to at least one colleague’s post in one of the following ways:

SPed 3301: Field Experiment project

Overview: Each student will interview two (2) individuals directly involved in the education of children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities in a K-12 or community-based setting. Potential interview subjects may include parents, general and special education teachers, current/former students with disabilities, or community-based health or social service providers. Students will submit a written summary and analysis of the interviews.

Detailed instructions: The step-by-step directions are described below. If you have any questions, please ask.

  1. Identify two individuals who are directly involved in the education of children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities in a K-12 or community-based setting. Potential interview subjects may include parents, teachers, individuals with disabilities, or community-based health or social service providers.
  2. Interview each person separately. The interviews should explore each individual’s:
    1. Experiences working with children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities;
    2. Understanding of special education (or adult service) procedures, responsibilities, and practices; and
    3. Opinion of the highlights and challenges of working with children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities.
  3. The interviews may be conducted via telephone, in-person, Skype, or through instant messaging technology (i.e., it has to be a “real-time” conversation).
  4. Submit a written summary and analysis of the interviews. The paper should include:
    1. A brief description of each interview subject:
      1. Who is this person? What is this person’s job?
      2. Why did you choose her/him? What is your relationship to her/him?
      3. What were the conditions for each interview? (i.e., When was it conducted? How was it conducted? Where was it conducted? How long did it last?).
    2. A summary of each individual’s experiences working with children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities
    3. A summary of each individual’s understanding of special education (or adult service) procedures, responsibilities, and practices
    4. A summary of each individual’s opinion of the highlights and challenges of working with children, youth, and/or adults with disabilities
    5. Your analysis of the individuals’ responses:
      1. Compare the responses of the individuals to each other;
      2. Compare their responses to what you have learned about the special education and disability services; AND
      3. Compare their perspectives to your own opinions on what the highlights and challenges might be.

Certain populations have different treatment needs. Female offenders and offenders with mental health disorders are two such populations, although they are by no means the only two populations with special considerations. A growing body of research suggests that specific treatment programs have been effective for these two respective populations. Such programs take into account culture, age, gender, criminal offense, and other factors and bring together resources from many professional fields to provide a coordinated effort.
For this Assignment, you will assume the role of a criminal justice practitioner (law enforcement, courts, or corrections) who must make a recommendation about an evidence-based program for either female offenders or offenders with mental health disorders that is relevant to your field of interest. You will present your recommendation in the form of a presentation.
To Prepare
• Select either female offenders or offenders with mental health disorders for this assessment.
• Research the historical context for treatment of your selected population as well as their special needs.
• Review the literature on treatment programs intended for your population. Select a program that has empirical support for its effectiveness. Your selected program should be relevant to treatment of the population in your particular field of interest (police, courts, or corrections).
The Assignment
Create a PowerPoint presentation in which you address the following:
• Part I: Provide historical context for the treatment of and outcomes for your selected population in the criminal justice system.
• Part II: Describe the special needs of this population related to their treatment in your selected field of interest in the criminal justice system.
• Part III: Identify the program you selected. Provide an overview of the program, including what services are provided and how the needs of the population are addressed.
• Part IV: Provide empirical support that demonstrates the program’s effectiveness. Cite at least two research studies that have tested the outcomes of the program.
