Let’s compare and contrast the J&J Tylenol case with the Merck Vioxx case from Week 1. Given that the outcome in the J&J case was primarily positive for the company and, in the Merck case, negative, what differentiates these two situations? What made Merck’s communication strategy – one that receives considerable praise at the time – so much less effective than J&J’s? What lessons can we learn from these two situations?
