Two weeks ago, she had a computed tomography scan that showed progressive spread of the cancer, and today she has come into the outpatient cancer clinic to begin a new round of chemotherapy. She is accompanied by her 78-year-old mother, Dorothy. A.M. is divorced and has three children who all live out of town.
