– what is the duration or longevity of the issue? (how long has it been going on, how long is it likely to continue?)

– is this a “LULU” or true environmental issue?

Answer preview

The process of pollution and cleaning up the mine has been ongoing for more than 30 years. The process began when Asarco Mining Company, which was operating the mine, went bankrupt and stopped their operations. There was a lawsuit at the time, and the company agreed to pay $1.7 million to the state to facilitate the cleanup process. At this point, the Idaho Department of environmental quality took up the responsibility of cleaning the mine and preventing any environmental pollution. The pollution is, however, likely to be stopped soon as there has been an agreement on how the state should clean up the mess and it could go into effect in a couple of months.
