The reconstruction period was both beneficial and detrimental to African Americans. For quite some time, African Americans were slaves in Southern plantations. They lived in awful conditions and got considered property rather than human beings. However, after the war’s culmination, the victors saw fit to transform this society (Guelzo, 2018). The first and most crucial transformation they did was freeing slaves, allowing them to enjoy some rights.
