Due to significant violations of federal and institutional rules and regulations, ethical issues in human participant research have received increasing attention over the past 50 years. While it might seem obvious that respect, integrity, fidelity, and justice should serve as the ethical foundation for all research activities, this has not always been the case for research involving human participation.

Instructions:

After reviewing Standard 8: Research and Publication of the APA Ethics Code, select three of the substandards and discuss their importance with respect to research activities. The fifteen substandards include:

8.1 Institutional Approval
8.2 Informed Consent to Research
8.3 Informed Consent for Recording Voices and Images in Research
8.4 Client/Patient, Student, and Subordinate Research Participants
8.5 Dispensing with Informed Consent for Research
8.6 Offering Inducements for Research Participation
8.7 Deception in Research
8.8 Debriefing
8.9 Humane Care and Use of Animals in Research
8.10 Reporting Research Results
8.11 Plagiarism
8.12 Publication Credit
8.13 Duplicate Publication of Data
8.14 Sharing Research Data for Verification
8.15 Reviewers

Consider a proposed research study that interests you and discuss how these standards would apply during the research process, including how you might ensure the protection of human subjects in a study on your topic.

Locate at least two scholarly references from the Ashford University Library to support your discussion. Your paper should be 700-1050 words in length (not counting the title and References pages).

1000 word discussion post

1. After reading the attached article please discuss the Threat Assessment (2011) promulgated by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the role that Organized Crime Groups and Narco-Traffickers are perpetuating narcotics abuse and addiction. (500-750 words, 2 citations)

2. In conducting additional research outside of this week’s readings, select a specific area, town, city, or state within the U.S. that is experiencing a drug problem and critique the steps they are taking to combat the problem. (500-750 word, 2 citations)

Instructions: The response to each question should be a “minimum” of 500 words of content (does not count references and or restating a question) and include “at least” two properly referenced sources, in accordance with APA 6th edition, for full credit. Please see the syllabus for what constitutes a “substantive” response.

Within your post, please place the first Forum response on top of the second, i.e., both Forum responses should be in the same post within the Forum.

Do not include statements such as great work, or excellent post. Try to include information that is challenging and respectful and that will stimulate debate. Additionally, please remember that simply posting the main post and a student colleague response post does not end the forum; the discussion forum should be dialogue that is continual until the Sunday deadline. Also, be mindful of including references and citations whenever citing facts to support your position.

It is essential that you realize that 500 words and 2 references for support per question contained in the primary forum assignment is the minimal expectation (if 2 questions are asked that means the primary post would be a minimum of 1,000 words not counting references or restating the questions); and, the student response posts (2 for each forum) 300 words and 1 reference for support is also the minimal expectation; this does not mean by meeting the minimal expectation that you will be awarded an “A.” This is a Master’s Degree program and course and the award of maximum credit is reserved only for those posts that are exemplary!

Also the content of the Forum Assignment will often ask the student to take a position on a particular topic. However, this is not a strict opinion paper in which you the student can just make a statement of what you think or what your experiences are on a topic. Instead, the student needs to support their opinion or experiences with qualifying research from academic source. APA 6th edition citations and references must be used always!

Hence, do not include statements such as great work, or excellent post.

Initial/Primary Post Due: Thursday 12 Midnight EST

Feedback/Participation Posts Due: Sunday 12 Midnight EST

Ethical Systems

Ethical Systems

You are a patrol officer in a state that prohibits the selling, giving, or sharing of any tobacco products with anyone younger than 18 years of age. Similarly, there is also a prohibition of selling, giving, or sharing any alcohol or alcoholic beverages with anyone younger than 21 years of age.

On your day off, you and several members of your shift have been invited to your sergeant’s home for a cookout. While standing around with the sergeant and a couple of your shift members, the sergeant’s daughter asks her father if he has any cigarettes. He hands her a pack of cigarettes out of his shirt pocket. Later, you notice the daughter and one of her friends sitting off to the side and both of them are drinking beers from cans. You know from a prior introduction that the daughter is 16 years old. Her friend looks to be the same age.

Analyze this situation and prepare a report that covers the following points:

  • Discuss all of your options in this scenario. Show how each option has a basis in an ethical system.
  • Provide background information from your home state regarding the behaviors described in the scenario. What do your state’s laws say about providing tobacco or alcohol to a minor?
  • Identify the utilitarian and deontological ethical philosophies of each option.
  • Describe what your response would be. Explain how your response would hold up if questioned by your captain.

Submit your response in a 4–6-page Microsoft Word document.
