This assignment refers to a New York Times article, ‘Do Happier People Work Harder?’, which is posted under Readings & Cases on BB. This article reports the results from a creatively designed research study that explored the causes of employee engagement at work.
Answer the questions below, writing formally – no sentence fragments or bullet point lists. Use Times New Roman 12 point font, one-inch margins, and double-spacing. One well-written paragraph per question should be sufficient. Writing quality always counts in MGT 377, so be sure to proofread and use spellcheck. Bring a printed copy to class (no e-mail submissions) for turn in at the start of class on the due date. We will discuss answers during class, so late papers will not be accepted.
As the final step, upload your report to ‘Turnitin’ at the link provided directly below these instructions.
Number your answers, responding separately to each question. Please do not include the questions in your report; this causes Turnitin to ‘flag’ your paper for high similarity with others.
Questions:
- As noted above, I chose this article partly due to the study’s creative research design. How did the authors collect their data in this study of employee engagement? Explain their method.
- A clear pattern emerged when they analyzed the data – What was the single most important determinant of employee engagement? Based on what is reported in the article, do managers seem to know what is most important?
- Use your own thinking here. Regarding the study’s conclusion about what is most important to employees, what should managers do with this information? In other words, what are some specific actions managers should take to sustain and even improve employee engagement?
Requirements: one paragraph per question
use only the article I uploaded for source.
Answer preview
From the analyzed data, the single most essential determinant of engagement is the employees’ ability to make meaningful progress in their workplaces. Amabile and Kramer (2011) inform that an outstanding aspect that helps achieve this is the inner motivation that makes employees happy as they engage in their workplace. This enhances the employees’ commitment, productivity, and willingness to work with their colleagues. However, the managers seem not to understand the most crucial aspect that employees look forward to regarding making meaningful progress. They do not acknowledge that the lack of supporting progress in the workplace is the highest determinant of employee engagement.
